VCE Package Guide

This resources package is created for the VCE Media 2018 Study design (VCAA 2017).

The package focuses on UNIT 4 (Year 12), Area of Study 2: Agency and Control in and of the Media. Through engagement with the key content, activities and resources students will be able to complete Outcome 2: 'discuss issues of agency and control in the relationship between the media and its audience'(VCAA 2017).

The package has a range of activities to engage diverse learners and effectively teach the relevant content for AOS2. The package can be used in conjunction with the planner as a guide/timeline for delivery.

The content:

This area of study, Agency and Control in and of the Media, looks at Media Influence, Audience Reception, Media Regulation and Classification. Upon completion of this area of study students will be able to express understanding of various media influence and audience reception theories. Students will also be able to display knowledge of case studies, research and criticisms surrounding the various theories.

Students will also engage in studying the concept of regulation and classification for all media sources. They will study the governing bodies, various policies and codes, and evaluate the ethical side of regulating media.

Pedagogical Strategy & teaching the content:

Within this AOS, my intention is to teach the students with innovative and interesting methods. The range of activities and resources collected for this package are designed to provide students with an engaging and interesting approach to learning the content for AOS2, allowing for both student led activities and teacher facilitated activities, with high ICT use.

This website is designed for the teacher and students to be able to interact with the content, activities and resources in conjunction with each other. In a highly modern society it is common and familiar for students to engage with ICT. This package provides numerous opportunity for ICT based learning, helping to support student learning and interests.

All of the activities connect to various resources on the resource page or with to the key content page(links are provided within the activities for easy access). The activities give students a guided focus for engaging with the provided materials and provide an opportunity for students to engage with the materials at their own pace.

Teachers can use this package by showcasing the chosen activity to the class via projector or sending the link, facilitating the activities, and then directing students to the resource page or providing the link. Furthermore, the planner, provides a timeline guide that teachers can use to inform when they conduct the activities.

By providing the activities online, students who miss lessons or are unable to complete their work in class can easily look to the site to catch up.

Furthermore, the resources page provides a great opportunity for students to engage with the extra links provided to extend their knowledge or support their understanding.

The Study Design & Assessment:

The package and planner have all been developed directly from the VCAA Media study design information. The key skills and knowledge have been analysed and utilised to inform the creation of activities, content and resources for students to engage with in order to provide students with the best possible opportunity to achieve the outcomes.

The completion of the Area of Study and the achievement of the Outcome will be assessed in alignment with assessment protocols and administrative rules mandated by the VCAA. As outlined in the 2018 study design, students will be completing a SAC (school assessed coursework) that is a series of short answer responses that discuss 'issues of agency and control in the relationship between the media and its audience' in exam style conditions.

The SAC will occur at the end of the unit, in term 3, after a period of revision/preparation lessons, as per the planner. Each activity outlined within this package will help prepare the students to learn the relevant content.Students will be expected to display the key skills and knowledge outlined in the VCE Media 2018 Study design for Area of Study 2/Outcome 2 in Unit 4 (Also available on the Key Content Page).Upon completion of the activities students will be assessed on the following:
 - Identification, comparison and contrast of communication theories and models.
- Application of communication theories and models to media forms and texts.
-Substantiation of arguments about media influence
- Discussion of the relationship between audiences and media forms and texts.
- Analysis of the the rationale for and arguments about the regulation of the media.
- Use of terminology and language appropriate to the area of study.
(VCAA 2016, p. 27).

Students will have access to the package, specifically the key content and resources page, to use as a revision tool. Furthermore, after engaging with the key content and activities, as stated in the planner, there are a range of lessons dedicated to workshopping SAC responses and engaging in revision tasks (suggested activities are also found on the activities page). There are also a number of SAC preparation resources on the resource page.
