Within levels 7-8 in history, students study'The Ancient World to the Modern World'(VCAA 2017). This includes: The Ancient Period (60 000 BC to 650 AD)and the Modern Period (650 AD to 1750 AD).

Ancient China 

Lesson plan and assessment task outline.

This lesson plan is a detailed and fully explained look at a year 7 history class. The lesson plan acts as an introduction to the depth study of Ancient China. The lesson plan is strongly linked to the curriculum and includes an assessment task. The lesson plan can be viewed here.

Ancient China Lesson Resources

These resources have been developed to look at Ancient China. The tasks outlined are a timeline of Ancient China which can be a great introductory task and will teach students to sequence events. The following task is a 'Facebook Profile' where the students complete a profile template with information about a Chinese Emperor. This task will teach students about the historical significance of an individual. Following this, students have a range of research questions to complete using the internet to research. This task will engage students with using historical sources as evidence, analysing the validity and usefulness of resources, and looking at different perspectives.

Medieval Europe Online Resources

  • This lesson plan looks at the different levels of society and the different roles in society that people had. The lessons plan has attached resources. The lesson is designed for grades 3-5 but can be easily adjusted for years 7-8. 

  • This lesson plan is an online lesson where students, with teacher scaffolding, follow a range of instructions on this website. By the end of the lesson students will have created a booklet about medieval life.

  • This is a list of websites that are helpful resources for teaching and learning about medieval Europe. 

Integrated unit outline.

This unit outline, made in collaboration with a fellow humanities teacher, is designed to link history and civics and citizenship in a sequence of lessons for year 8 students. The unit sequence is for 12 lessons and includes an assessment. The lesson sequences focuses on Medieval Europe for the history component and the roles of individuals as global citizens within modern society. The lesson sequence can be viewed here.

Research Skills

Many students in the earlier year levels do not have the skills needed to research effectively. This lesson plan and accompanying notes teach students the skills to research effectively and to judge the validity of a resource. The lesson goes through, in detail, the skills and steps of effective research. The lesson also teaches students to consider whether the resource is valid, trusted, relevant and current. The activity within the lesson provides the students with an opportunity to use these skills, which will consolidate learning for future use.
