Assessment
Formative Assessment:
Formative assessment is 'assessment that is specifically intended to generate feedback to improve and accelerate student learning'(Tuttle 2008, p. 4) and can also be referred to as continuous assessment. Throughout the Year 10 Unit there will be a number of formative assessments:
-
Bi-Weekly Interviews - These interviews will be between the teacher and one student. The interview process acts to break down the major assessment task of their final product. The interviews will centre around the students' folios, looking at the creative progress and how their planning and idea development is progressing. These interviews will provide valuable insight into what the student has learnt, what help they need and what direction they are interested in going. These interviews are essential to provide useful feedback to the students that they can use to improve their work (Spiller 2009, p. 3).
-
Bi-Weekly Self assessment - Students will be required to fill out this questionnaire in their folios every two weeks following their interview to self assess their progress. This will help the students reflect on their own work, as well as, on the feedback provided in the interview (Spiller 2009, p. 4).
-
Weekly Blog Posts and Discussion - Every week students will be required to post on the class blog with an annotated image of, or from, their media product. This will enable students to self-assess their work when selecting, annotating and posting their image. Students will also be able to peer-assess each other's work as each student will be required to comment on at least two other's posts. From the posts and the comments I will be able to assess student progress and understanding in their products as well as student ability to analyse and evaluate images through their comments. This will help to inform me on what areas can be improved on in the classroom, an adjust my planning accordingly.
-
Completed classroom activities: During some classes students will undertake and complete various activities to enhance their learning. This could be the completion of the magazine layout task for example. I will collect and look at each student's completed work to inform my planning for future lessons.
Summative Assessment:
Summative assessment is 'an overall measure of student performance at a particular point in time'(Myers 2015), usually at the end of a topic or unit of study to provide a final grade.
The major summative assessment tasks: The major assessment task within this unit is the Media Production Plan (also referred to as the Media Folio) and the final product created by the student, whether this be a magazine layout, video or a series of photographs (among other things). Students will be provided with an assessment outline and rubric at the beginning of the unit so they will be well informed as to what is expected of them. Furthermore, bi-weekly interviews between student and teacher will occur which will check student progress and help assist them to achieve in their final work, further keeping them informed.
Completed classroom activities: Some classroom activities that the students will undertake and complete towards the end of a topic will be used as summative assessment.
