The Media Arts
The Media Arts is a subject that enables students to grow creatively and intellectually through the act of creating and responding to artworks whilst engaging with digital communication.
What are the Media Arts?
The Media Arts is the study of media, art and design. This means that we explore a range of media such as photos, film, news reports, documentaries, advertisements (in print and film form), music videos, animations, video games, and graphic novels in order to understand, analyse and create. Students who undertake Media Arts will engage in the program as both creator and audience, enabling students to improve their creative skills, as well as their critical thinking skills.
Media and the curriculum.
Within the curriculum, the Media Arts is under the ‘Arts’ umbrella due to the creative element of the subject. The subject, however, is not just about creating art; it is also about understanding and critically analysing, media in our everyday lives and developing digital communication skills. This is an increasingly important skill in a world where technology is constantly developing, increasing globalization and media presence across a number of digital platforms.
By giving students the opportunity to both create and analyse media, Media Arts has ‘the capacity to engage, inspire and enrich the lives of students, encouraging them to develop their creative and intellectual potential (VCAA 2017).
